In our time, films that tell about all sorts of disasters are in demand. They attract viewers with their spectacularity, stunning special effects and intensity of emotions. These films are, in a way, a subtype of genres such as drama and thriller. They became most popular in the 70s in the United States of America and were the highest grossing at that time. But the first films with elements of a catastrophe appeared much earlier - in the 30s. For about ten years, disaster films held the leading position, and then the public's interest in them greatly diminished.

Classification of cataclysms in cinematography

There are three types of cataclysms that we can observe in films:

  •     Man-made disasters - here we are talking about the crash of planes, submarines, ships, about uncontrolled transport, about terrorist attacks and even about an attack on our planet by aliens.
  •     Global natural disasters are large-scale incidents when all the inhabitants of our planet are under threat, for example: a meteorite fall or climate change on Earth.
  •     Local natural disasters - concentrated in a specific area. For example, a volcanic eruption, flood, earthquake, avalanche, fire, storm, tsunami.

Certain disaster films have long been cult films and are loved by many audiences. There are so many of them that it is simply impossible to list everything, but the most popular of them can be singled out - the works of Roland Emmerich "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012", the Soviet film "Crew" and its 2016 remake of the same name. Also the film "Poseidon" about the wreck of a cruise ship in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the legendary work of James Cameron, probably known to everyone - "Titanic". It is also worth mentioning a painting based on real events called "The Impossible" about the tsunami in Thailand, formed as a result of the earthquake in the Indian Ocean.
